Chapter Twelve

She shouldn’t be here.

Still... Gina closed the car door and waved off the Uber driver.

This was silly. Ridiculous, even. Just because Darien apologized—and kissed her—didn’t mean she had to come watch him dance.

Again.

Gina turned around to call the driver back —but he was gone.

She was taking that as a sign.

Convenient.

She took a deep breath, the cold burning its way down her throat, and rolled her shoulders back. After Candy had left, she’d stared at the walls of her apartment, wondering what she was going to do to pass the time until tomorrow morning when she’d see him again. Then she’d realized she could see him now. There was still his second show of the night left.

She wanted to see him. To see this. Wanted to watch him dance through a new set of eyes because things had changed since the last time. Oh how they’d changed. Enough that she would pay attention this time. Enjoy herself. She’d just grab a seat on the periphery and no one would know. Not Darien, not Bryan, and definitely not Candy. This would be only for her.

She walked in and ducked into the service corridor that connected backstage, the dressing area, the kitchen, and the far side of the club for the serving staff so they wouldn’t have to wade through tables of raucous women. Called the cattle chute, it was dimly lit, which made it especially helpful for her plan. All she had to do was avoid any of the dancers.

“Gina? What are you doing here?”

Of course Darien would be walking down the corridor. In red suspenders and fireman’s pants and nothing else. Okay, boots, too, but even those looked sexy on him.

“Is everything okay? Do you need me for something?”

He had no idea.

“I, uh.” Damn, it was one thing to watch and him not know, but for him to know she was here... Talk about embarrassing.

Or arousing. Exciting. Titillating, even.

“I came back for my coat. I, um, left it here the other night.” Please don’t ever let Candy and Darien compare notes about the darn coat.

“It’s probably in the office. That’s usually where lost items end up. Want me to take a look?”

“No, that’s okay. I’m sure you have to finish, uh, getting ready.” She waved her hands in front of him, trying desperately not to stare at his six pack.

Make that an eight-pack.

She tugged her coat closed.

“Nah, I’m ready. Not much to the costume. As you know.” He waggled his eyebrows.

Was it wrong that butterflies suddenly woke up and sprouted wings in her stomach?

Probably, but she wasn’t going to deny it. That look, those dimples... That chest... And he’d apologized. And meant it. And then there was Candy’s all-clear, both financially and... intellectually? Physically?

She wasn’t sure how to categorize getting the go-ahead from her best friend, but Candy was going to have to keep her eyes to herself from now on if she came to the club. “Um, no big deal. I’m only going to be here a few seconds anyway.
